Day #3.9 - Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

We are AVID Scholars and our Superpower is Telepathy!

How did these awesome AVID students know that we had a superhero/superpower theme going on this year?!?  Telepathy of course!  How much did I love it when I found Tajne Jeffries, a brand new AVID 9 scholar, in my class on the first day with a Superman t-shirt on?!?  And then of course there are Sharmara and Jalinh - two brand new AVID 12 scholars reporting for Superstudent action on Day 1.

Now meet Isaiah, Ciera (missing from photo because she is on the other side of the room looking at photos of previous AVID scholars) and John.  These 3 AVID 9 students made the honest mistake of going to the wrong lunch on the first day of AVID.  They assumed that because they had A lunch on A days, that they would have A lunch on B days as well.  And of course our schedules don't make lunches really obvious to read.  So they went straight to lunch after 2nd period instead of coming to AVID first.  When they showed up 30 minutes late I tried not to give them too hard a time (difficult for me) but I did inform them that they would be staying with me during their lunch - that their inability to read a schedule did not earn them two lunch shifts in one day.  This mistake ended up letting me get to know 3 super cool kids.  Isaiah started telling me all about the college history in his family and I couldn't help but love him for wearing a University of Michigan t-shirt.  He wanted to know which college pennant on my wall represented my college.  I told him a pennant wouldn't do for MY college - I needed a full blown flag to represent my beloved Grand Valley State University (see top left of photo).  But the reason I snapped this photo is that I was so impressed with their natural curiosity and interest in AVID.  They all three got out of their seats and starting touring the room, asking all kinds of interesting questions about our traditions and the previous AVID scholars.  Their simple mistake turned into a beautiful moment I felt compelled to record.
