Project 365: Day 14 - Sun. May 31st, 2009

8:39 pm - Today after Cody had watched Glory and The Patriot I said enough was enough - no more movies, no more TV. It was a gorgeous day outside and this little boy needed to get out and play. So without too much attitude he put on his Union Soldier hat, grabbed his Civil War rifle and headed for the backyard, where he was on the look out for Confederates. He pegged my neighbor as a rebel and took him out with a single shot. "Aim small, miss small" - I heard him whispering in the red maple tree. He has memorized at least 50 lines from each movie and can recall facts and places better than this 41 year old. But the adventure wasn't over. His imagination then took him upstairs to his drawing book. This picture doesn't come with sound effects but for each cannon fire that was drawn, there was a shot to be heard all the way down into my kitchen. Never a dull moment around 1030 S. Main St. when my Colonel Cody Lee is protecting his precious union.

This is the way Cody entertains himself - he doesn't have any siblings so he has to be his own entertainment. I believe his only-child status fosters his creativity. So I started thinking about creativity and our imaginations. I learned in a graduate course that creativity is one the 11 Habits of Mind - it can be both cultivated and lost. What did you do to sharpen your creativity today? Where did your imagination take you? Did you do anything that fostered the creative part of your brain? Nothing right? Well here you go.... Go pick up some crayons, smell them, then let your mind, the crayons, and your hand take you to a new world of possibilities....

  1. Being an only child certainly does have advantages and definitely fosters creativity, but it can also be terribly lonely at times...I just hope and pray he doesn't have problems connecting with other kids as I did at that age.

  2. Luckily he doesn't have problems connecting - his issue is sharing! The fact that he has been around my other "kids" since he was born has made him quite social - he just hasn't mastered the selfish thing yet.
