So today Katie and I left school early in order to talk to the 8th graders at Deer Park Magnet Middle School who were recommended for the AVID program. We got there and it was really chaotic but soon we were able to settle them down and I was shocked at how well they responded. Katie and I wore our AVID hoodies to show our AVID pride. Shavonda Epps, Alexis Dillard and Shawn Magginson joined us so that the 8th graders could see and hear from people who were once in their shoes and are glad they've chosen the AVID path. Of course Shavonda impressed them all beyond belief. She was animated with a commanding presence and simply said things I couldn't pay her to say. She urged them all to read "her story" and realize that if she can make it through what she has experienced that they can too. My love for that girl just burgeons every day.
