Thanks to the Maryland Writing Project, this meaningful year long activity is going to help my AVID seniors remember not just bits and pieces of their senior year, but bits and pieces of each DAY of their senior year. Here you will find my photos and thoughts for the next 365 days. I am certain this will be one of the most rewarding projects my students and I do. First a click of the camera, then the happy clicking of my keyboard. Let the journey begin...

Project 365: Day 64 - Mon. July 20th, 2009
A productive day in the library. And I can't help but compare this summer school experience to my daily life as the AVID leader. This morning the kids didn't talk, they wrote and they put more thought into a book than they probably ever have. I'm sure there are times but my AVID classrooms are never this quiet and productive. Is it because they are like family? They just can't sit near each other without socializing? I have worked hard to build a commaraderie but in the end is it counterproductive?

That's a very interesting question...and maybe that's something that you can check out. I think the "family" atmosphere" actually helps more than hurts, because if you jack them up, it's like they are being jacked up by their mother. Besides, I don't think it's just in the AVID classroom that your AVID scholars socialize over-much...it's a school-wide problem with our students...the NEED to socialize is just far too great and it overpowers any other needs they have...like the NEED to get a quality education!
