Whenever I go to Kohl's I check out the children's book they are featuring for their Kohl's Cares for Kids program. The books are always $5.00, hardcover, and make the best gifts. I usually buy them and keep them on hand for upcoming birthdays and baby showers. Well this time it was a book called Actual Size by Steve Jenkins. I had never seen or heard of it so I opened it up and was immediately mesmorized. The next best thing Cody loves after a war movie is the animal planet chanel. Since this was obviously about nature I picked it up as a WAY TO GO gift for Cody's latest brown belt test.
Through amazing artwork, the book's premise is to show animals in actual size as well as give interesting facts. The cover shows the hand of a gorilla in "actual size" along with a pygmy mouse lemur in "actual size". Both have hands much like ours. The minute Cody opened it he started comparing his size to the actual size of the animals. It of course turned into our photo opportunity of the day. The fold out page of the saltwater crocodile, labeled as the world's largest reptile and a man-eater, proved that it could eat more than Cody's arm in just one bite. Then there is the smallest of all fish - the dwarf goby - which is smaller than Cody's finger nail. I didn't know what struck me with more awe - the power of the comparisons or the power of the visual art. Either way it got me thinking about actual size....
what is the actual size of a mother's heart? ... or what about the actual size of a child's imagination? ... or what about the actual size of an individual's potential and can one's choices actually shrink or expand that potential? Are the choices you are making right now expanding or shrinking the actual size of your potential? Answer it honestly and then ask three people to see if they agree with you.... that should give you an actual size answer.
