Day 3 - 12:30 pm. Today Alyssa opened her brand new shiny AVID laptop. She was the recipient of this year's AVID scholarship and was so happy to see it was an AVID blue. Instead of giving her $500 that she would never see, I thought it might be more effective if she was reminded every day that she has an AVID family behind her. Now she will log on everyday and feel the presence of her AVID heritage. I am not only proud of Alyssa's accomplishments but also of the way that the fellow AVID 12 scholars celebrated with her. They did not turn that nasty color green that makes unattractive comments slide out the side of one's mouth. Instead they congratulated her and affirmed that she was deserving of this honor. My 10th graders walked in and saw her on it and were gathered around her like she was a story teller - admiring, hoping, dreaming....God speed Alyssa.... see you on FB! :)
